Places to Visit

La Rochelle

La Rochelle was first founded as a fishing village in the 10th century and is one of France’s oldest and loveliest coastal towns. Tourist attractions are every where. Its historic port is beautifully preserved with a quayside that bustles with boats small and large, the seafront is packed full of lively cafés, bars and restaurants where you can stop and watch the world go by.

The theme park covers over 120 acres of landscaped gardens and is the top attraction in the Poitou-Charentes and second in France. With a mix of rides plus jaw-dropping 3D films and 4D effects that take you surfing gigantic waves, flying over the oceans with whales and dolphins below you and even whizzing into outer space. The evenings are also filled with beautiful coloured water displays.

Puy du Fou

A little further away is the Puy du Fuy theme park , voted the best theme park in the world providing historical re-enactments, shows and events. Seasonal events and shows continue throughout the year.

This charming and atmospheric town is set in sun-flower filled country side; with  cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, small shops, and many lovely restaurants. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday and its indoor market with its wide selection meat, fruit, fish, seafood & chesses makes it one of the very best  markets in the area. The market is full of colour and delicious smells that entice you to try the wonderful local produce.

Wine Regions

The village is located midway between the Loire Valley and Cognac regions with Bordeaux the furthest, a little over 2 hours drive away. However Poitou Charentes region produces its own red, white, rosé and sparkling wines that can genuinely compete with the best. Enjoy the excellent wines of the Charente and Charente-Maritime, to those of the Haut-Poitou, Thouarsais, Saumur and Anjou wine areas. Spend time visiting the beautiful city of Cognac and sample its famous brandies and enjoy the highly recommended Remy Martin Tour or one of the many alternative Cognac houses. Sample the more local aperitif Pineau des Charentes, a fortified wine (mistelle or vin de liqueur), made from a blend of lightly fermented grape must and Cognac eau-de-vie.

Zoo and animal park in the forêt de Chizé in the Deux-Sèvres is nearby and has over 50 acres of parkland which it is the home for over 500 animals from mainland Europe. It is very sympathetic to protecting endangered species and biodiversity. The walk though the parkland is a treat of it's own.

Marais Poitevin

Just west of the historic city of Niort is the tourist attraction of Marais Poitevin. This lowland area of marshes, waterways and rows of poplar trees has been described as Green Venice. It’s a great place to explore at your leisure by boat or canoe and a must-visit if you are coming to stay in the region.

With its red-tiled roofs, steep cobbled streets and typically French town square lined with linden trees, it’s not surprising that this village in the south of the Charente is the best-known and most popular of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

La Roche Courbon

One of our favourite days out is this hidden treasure dating back to the early

15th Century with its beautiful gardens, magnificent Château and cave dwellings dating back over 50,000 years.

Chateau Javarzay

This lovely Chateau in the picturesque market town of  Chef-Boutonne. The original castle is thought to be the home of the first king of France.

Take a moment to absorb the beauty of Le Pamproux as it winds though Salles
